VPS GUIDE

What can you use a VPS for? Six examples: websites, apps and game servers

A VPS is a server on which you configure and run software yourself. Beyond publishing websites, you can run applications, host games with friends, and build development or learning environments. Here are six common uses and what to check before starting.

What a VPS can do—and what you manage yourself

A VPS is a virtual server on a physical host. You can install software within the permissions and supported operating systems offered by the service. With a self-managed VPS, you handle OS and application updates, access controls and backups. It does not mean you have exclusive use of an entire physical server or network connection.

1. Publishing websites and WordPress

Host a blog, portfolio or business website. Configure a web server and, for WordPress, the required environment such as PHP and a database. Check your domain's DNS and HTTPS settings before publishing.

Load depends on images, plugins and database processing as well as visitor numbers. If straightforward website publishing is your only goal, shared hosting with less administration can also be worth comparing.

2. Running web applications and APIs

Run a web application you have built or an API used by a mobile app. You can combine an application runtime, the databases you need and a public-facing web server.

Configuring the features yourself also means taking care of authentication, data protection, logs and rollback during updates. Avoid unintentionally exposing databases or administration interfaces to the internet.

3. Game servers such as Minecraft

Host a game server for friends or a community. Install compatible server software and manage players, worlds and game settings. The server runs on the VPS without requiring you to keep your own PC switched on.

Check each game's supported OS and usage conditions. Performance requirements vary with players, worlds, mods, plugins and view distance. RAM or vCPU counts alone cannot guarantee a simultaneous player count; check latency and world backups too.

4. Text bots and scheduled jobs

Send text notifications to a community, prepare summary reports or process data on a schedule. Running your program on a VPS lets it operate separately from your own PC.

Follow external APIs' terms and rate limits, and keep bot tokens and API keys private. Prepare error notifications and recovery after a restart. Treat this as a different use from audio or video streaming services.

5. Development and testing environments

Check an application before release or provide a shared testing environment for a team. A separate environment is also useful for trying software updates and configuration changes before applying them to production.

Protect testing environments with authentication and access restrictions. Do not copy production secrets or personal data unchanged into testing. Use test data where appropriate and manage production and testing configurations separately.

6. Learning Linux and server administration

Practice command-line operations, user and permission management, web server configuration and log inspection. Starting with a small web page makes it easier to see how configuration changes affect behavior.

Even a learning server needs administration when connected to the internet. Use strong authentication, allow only necessary network traffic and apply security updates. Test backup and restoration before storing important data.

What to check when choosing a plan

  • Check the software's supported operating systems, requirements and license.
  • Estimate storage for growing data and logs as well as CPU and RAM requirements. Start with a small setup and a few users, then check actual resource use and response times.
  • Account for outgoing traffic from web pages, API responses, game connections and off-server backups. Treat connection speed and monthly transfer allowances as separate conditions.
  • Consider the time needed for updates, monitoring, backups and restoration, not just the rental price. Keep restorable backups somewhere separate from the VPS.

Before using VANEROLA VPS

VANEROLA VPS is self-managed. You handle OS and application configuration and updates, data management and backups. Server setup and administration on your behalf are not included.

VANEROLA VPS cannot be used to operate streaming services, mine cryptocurrency, or run anonymization services, public VPNs or public proxies, among other prohibited uses. Not every technically possible VPS use is permitted. Contact us before starting if you are unsure.

This article gives general use examples and does not guarantee that applications are currently accepted or that service can be provisioned. Check the VANEROLA VPS details and terms for current regions, availability, specifications and conditions.
